Earlier this week, UK Ambassador Simon Walters led a British Embassy delegation on a two-day visit to the Negev region, focusing on sustainability, innovation, and regional cooperation.
The clean energy revolution is the economic opportunity of this century – a route to good jobs, energy security, and growth. As the UK leads the way towards net zero, with commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 81% by 2035 and generate 95% of electricity from low-carbon sources by 2030, we are also investing in transformative science and technology to turbocharge our economy and support global climate goals.
The visit included:
☀️ Learning how thermal solar power is delivering clean energy across the Negev at the Megalim Solar Power Ltd.
🌊 Touring the MEKOROT® desalination centre in Eilat, which provides clean water to thousands of households.
⛵ Visiting the IUI – The Interuniversity Institute for Marine Sciences in Eilat to understand Israeli marine research and its efforts to support biodiversity and tackle marine pollution.
🤝 Meeting the Mayor of Eilat, Eli Lankri, to discuss mutual challenges and opportunities for collaboration.
🍅 Engaging with the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies on their humanitarian, climatech, and peacebuilding initiatives.
Throughout the visit, the potential for climatech to support adaptation and mitigation efforts – while fostering regional dialogue and cooperation – was clear. The UK is working with Israeli partners in advancing clean technologies and sustainable solutions that benefit both our economies and our planet.
